A Special Night @ The Museum on Feb 5th!

// January 28th, 2010 // No Comments » // events, music

A  Night @ The Museum on Feb 5th with the Brooklyn-based Yeasayer and LA’s very own Warpaint. Tickets still available here.

Picture 1

Warpaint’s hypnotic, layered, bass-driven music with ethereal vocals creates an atmosphere that seems to melt and float around the listener. This quartet is not to be missed. Hailing from Brooklyn, Yeasayer’s music is a genre-bending journey into pop, rock, Middle Eastern and African musics, folk, and dub.

First Friday paid admission includes full access to the Museum.

Lhasa de Sela was born on September 27, 1972, in Big Indian, New York.

Mexican-American singer Lhasa de Sela passed away at the age of 37 in her Montreal home on January 1st 2010, just before midnight.

She succumbed to breast cancer after a 21 month struggle.

According to a statement from her record label, Audiogram, de Sela died quietly at her home in Montreal on the evening of January 1. She is survived by her partner Ryan, parents and step-parents, a number of siblings, nieces and nephews.

Throughout this difficult period, she continued to touch the lives of those around her with her characteristic grace, beauty and humor. The strength of her will carried her once again into the recording studio, where she completed her latest album, followed by successful record launches in Montreal at the Théatre Corona and in Paris at the Théatre des Bouffes du Nord. Two concerts in Iceland in May were to be her last.

She was forced to cancel a long international tour scheduled for autumn 2009. A projected album of the songs of Victor Jara and Violeta Parra would also remain unrealized.

De Sela was graced with an artful and whir of a voice. She showed great skill in manipulating this hardy, smoky instrument, and used it as a guiding compass to her own discovering of the art. Her transient songs fluttered in a space between different genres; Lhasa’s work combines elements of traditional gypsy tunes, Latin American folk and dark, cabaret-tinged rock music.

Maybe because she never quite fit comfortably into an easily-marketable category, she never gained the kind of North American attention she deserved — at least, not in your average genre circles.  With that said, she did win a Juno award for Best Global Artist (in 1998, for her 1997 album La Llorona), and self-titled third album was long-listed for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize. Her 2nd album, 2003’s The Living Road, earned de Sela a strong European following, and she received a BBC World Music Award for Best Artist of the Americas in 2005.

The passing of such a unique and talented voice and at such a young age is a horrible loss. It’s tragic to think of all the potential fans who have yet to discover de Sela’s music and will now never have a chance to see this unique performer live. My thoughts are with her family and friends and may her voice live on – Justin Snyder of Pushgallery

The Winstons – Amen Brother

// December 22nd, 2009 // No Comments » // music

The most famous loop af all times! “Amen Break,” a six-second drum sample from the b-side of this chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music — a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures.

:Below is an introduction the Arizona Stronghold Vineyard:

2007 marks an important year in wine history with the coming together of two men who plan to launch Arizona into the fine wine scene.  Eric Glomski (Owner/Director of Winemaking at Page Springs Cellars and previously Winemaker at David Bruce Winery), Maynard Keenan (Owner of Caduceus Cellars and singer for some po-dunk band called TOOL)  have come together under the banner of Arizona Stronghold Vineyards.

Keenan and Glomski, founders of the Company, knowing that quality fruit is the key to all winemaking endeavors, set off to transform the ageing Dos Cabezas Vineyard near Willcox, Arizona into a top notch, high quality effort.  Poorly performing varietals were ripped up or grafted over in the first year, and several acres of new plantings have already been planted.  The core of the red plantings are Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Tempranillo and Sangiovese with Viognier and Malvasia Bianca anchoring the white plantings. (Several other varietals also supplement these grapes.)

Picture 10Stronghold has teamed up with Quench Fine Wines who will act as the sole wholesale distributor for Arizona Stronghold Vineyards wines.  Quench was chosen because of their dedication to quality both in their product selection and their sales service.  The first Stronghold wine, TAZI, a white blend, will be released in March of 2008.  The first two reds NACHISE (a Grenache based Rhone Blend) and MANGUS (a Super Tuscan Sangiovese based blend) will grace our palates in the Fall of 2008.  Stronghold’s goal is to put fine Arizona wine on tables throughout the State.
